Blood Omega-3 Levels Help Reduce Mortality Risk:

A new meta-analysis of 17 prospective cohort studies involving 42,466 participants found that higher blood levels of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (EPA, DPA, DHA) are significantly associated with reduced risk of death from all causes, cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer, and other causes. Over an average follow-up period of 16 years, there were 15,720 deaths, and those in the highest omega-3 group had a 15–18% lower risk of death compared to those in the lowest group. However, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) from plant sources did not show a similar association.

Long-Chain Omega-3s and Cardiovascular Health

Previous studies on omega-3s and cardiovascular disease have shown mixed results. However, this research strengthens the evidence that higher blood omega-3 levels help reduce the risk of cardiovascular mortality and promote healthy aging.

Mortality Rates by Cause

  • All-cause mortality: Participants with the highest EPA, DPA, and DHA levels had a 9–13% lower risk of death.
  • Cardiovascular mortality: Long-chain omega-3s were significantly associated with reduced CVD mortality risk.
  • Cancer mortality: EPA and DPA showed protective effects, while DHA was not significantly associated.
  • Other causes: All long-chain omega-3s were linked to reduced mortality risk.

Biological Mechanisms

Omega-3s may extend lifespan through biological effects such as reducing inflammation, lowering triglycerides, inhibiting platelet aggregation, improving endothelial function, and balancing autonomic activity. In addition, animal studies suggest omega-3s may influence the mTOR signaling pathway—a key factor in aging and cancer.

Conclusion

This is the first meta-analysis to demonstrate that blood levels of long-chain omega-3s are inversely associated with mortality risk from all causes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. The findings highlight the importance of omega-3 supplementation for maintaining health and longevity.
